Climate debates

I am sad that the Conservative candidates didn't attend the local all party climate debates. Seems like the comment that Mr. Otoole is unable to convince his caucus that the climate crisis exists is accurate. Express your opinion and vote please. Nikos

WE MADE HISTORY! TORONTO COUNCIL BACKS FOSSIL FUEL FREE FUTURE! Thank you everyone for your hard work! Your letters, phone calls, and wide participation in a whirlwind one-month campaign has resulted in a historic victory, one that will be heard around the world, inspiring other activists to make their city next in this global revolution. And it is nothing short of a revolution. To transition from being 80% dependent on fossil fuel energy to being 100% free of fossil fuel energy by 2050- and to meet the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change call for 45% reduction in this decade - 7.6% per year - is a huge transition, and we need everyone on the team. We thank Councillors Mike Layton and Shelley Carroll for submitting the motion, the Mayor, and all the councillors who supported it. It passed 22 - 2. (only Ford and Holyday against, and Mantas and Minnan-Wong were absent).  You can see our media release here: And we had fun in this campaign too! From our campaign launch on June 14th

Only days before in the Northwestern United States, a region famed for its cool, foggy weather, hundreds had died of heat. In Canada, wildfire had burned a village off the map.

Ontario imposes restrictions on industrial operations in northwest as wildfires burn BY  THE CANADIAN PRESS POSTED JUL 20, 2021 12:38 PM EDT   LAST UPDATED JUL 20, 2021 AT 12:39 PM EDT FILE PHOTO: (AP Photo/Noah Berger, File) Ontario is imposing new restrictions on the mining, rail, construction and transportation industries in the province’s northwest to reduce the likelihood of human-caused fires. The move comes as 107 active wildfires burn in the region, with 32 of those not under control. The government says operations that are now restricted include certain specific drilling, using heavy machinery with rubber tires and no chains, and rail production grinding. The restrictions are aimed at high-risk operations that could cause sparks and ignite fires. Greg Rickford, the minister of northern development, mines, natural resources and forestry, says the new measures will help sustain Ontario’s firefighting resources. The restrictions have been imposed under an emergency order curren

Imagine being able to ride a bike to the subway or new LRT on Eglinton. With protected bike lanes it would be a fun, easy, and healthy experience getting to school, the grocery store, or your favourite dinner spot. Calling for protected bike lanes to connect Thorncliffe Park and Flemingdon Park is about more than transportation — our streets have the power to connect communities, improve our mental and physical health, provide space for children to play, and allow businesses to thrive. Cycle Toronto is advocating for reimagining our streets to their full potential and making them work better for everyone. While people will still be able to drive, other options, like biking, will be a lot more appealing with safe spaces on the road. This is a conversation about safe, healthy, and

Year Two – Vegetable Gardens in July  By Janet Nanos With the new raised bed in a sunny location we could plant a larger variety of vegetables this summer. The shady front yard patch from last year is still excellent for lettuce, arugula, spinach and green onions, but other leafy greens which I thought might do well are not thriving there. Swiss chard, for example, is doing much better in a pot in the sun. Beets are producing tops but very little root. Cilantro is also very slow and needs more sun. Vegetables in the sun are zucchini, squash, tomatoes, parsnips, carrots, Swiss chard, beans, peas and leeks. We started a number of plants indoors from seed this year which have been quite successful. Most of these plants are thriving but probably should have been thinned more – that’s hard to do! Nick in the shady front yard patch. It does get dappled sun which is fine for some leafy greens but not enough sun for most vegetables. Next year we’ll only plant lettuce, spinach, arugula and
I recently heard an interview on As It Happens with Phillipe Sands, a University College London law professor and co-chair of a legal panel that drew up a draft definition of 'ecocide' intended for the International Criminal Court . #ecocide #law A panel of 12 experts from the Stop Ecocide Foundation came up with a legal definition of ecocide, and are calling on the International Criminal Court (ICC) to adopt it. The draft law defines ecocide as "unlawful or wanton acts committed with knowledge that there is a substantial likelihood of severe and widespread or long-term damage to the environment being caused by those acts." "I think the zeitgeist right now is to recognize there is a gap, and the international criminal laws, as such, need to focus not only on human beings, but on the environment on which we are so very dependent," panel co-chair Philippe Sands, a law professor at the University College London, told  As It Happens  guest host Duncan McCue.
